I’m already booked in for a winter escape in 2017 but knowing the winter we’ll probably getting here in the UK I thought it was worth asking Shiraz Ksaiba who runs the retreats to do a post for us as to what you could expect…
I was working in TV and film as a DOP and camera operator in London before we started Amayour Surf hostel in Taghazout in October 2015. It came about through a long desire to leave the UK and start up a surf hostel. I meet partner Mhand in Taghzout a year before over a month christmas holiday in 2014, we spent the next 10 months travelling to Morocco as often as possible every 6 weeks or so. Luckily I was a freelancer and over a 3 week break we were basically living on a wild beach in Tamri, 30 Km north of Taghazout where he was lifeguarding. It was there we came up with the idea of Amayour Surf. I have been surfing for about 7 years and been doing yoga since my son was 7 now he is 20!
Amayour is Mhand’s nickname meaning full moon in Berber and so I spent the rest of the summer getting the branding and website together telling my family and preparing for opening the place.
A flying visit to look for the house and then 6 weeks later me and my then 6 (now 8) year old arrived. So with a couple of thousand pounds only we started the hostel and have not stopped since!
We have kept on evolving and growing and before the beginning of this season we made a rooftop bedroom and bathroom with the help of local craftsmen. For us it’s important to utilize the local tradesmen in everything that we do. I prefer to pay for locals who know their trade, the area, the materials and also can get us good deals. I think that Morocco has a wealth of industrious and creative people if you know where to look. This has been a real adventure and a massively challenging yet creative process .
After we started I got an email from Philly, who is leading our 1st retreat asking if I was looking for a yoga teacher in house but we just where not ready for something like that. I told her that I would be in touch later after our first season. So in the summer after nearly a year I wanted to start offering week-long retreats. But here in Taghazout there are so many surf yoga retreats it is hard to get a USP so when I got back in touch with Philly she suggested that her partner could come and head the surf team as he is 3 x GB surf champ Alan Stokes. I couldn’t say no!
And so we embark on and invite you to our first retreat week at Amayour Surf: Fresh and Wild. A unique and exclusive week to us here in Taghazout!
