Shuang Shuang - Hot Pot in Soho
The hotpot is a beautiful thing. Sometimes refer to as the Chinese version of fondue, it is a form of eating whereby diners take raw ingredients which they cook in a communal broth right at the table. As far as dining experiences go, you’ll be hard pressed to find something more sociable and interactive and it is for this reason that I have such fond memories of ones from my childhood.

So when I found out Shuang Shuang had opened it’s doors to the public, I was rather excited. Located at the very heart of London in it’s iconic Chinatown, it is taking the traditional hotpot to the next level by upgrading every element of it – banging broth, wicked sauces and quality ingredients.
The meal starts with the broth selection of which there are 4, each good enough to be a soup. This is followed by a selection of sauces before you are set free on the conveyor belt of glorious plates (prices from £1 – £5) to start cooking; and start you will.

For those with a lack of self control (like me), you will be tempted to grab everything in sight because everything looks so good. But from experience, exercise self-restraint and let the conveyor belt do a loop brother you begin – don’t worry, you’ll get what you want and if you don’t see it, the staff will find it. Highlight plates for me were the Japanese marbled beef and the salmon which were both incredible. Pair these with some noodles and veges and you’ve got yourself a rather lovely meal.

However, I do caution that with any meal like this, there is the risk that the bill will ramp up if you’re not careful and for a single person who wants to try everything, the experience could prove pricey. But come in a group and you’ll find it to be just fine and truth be told, hot pot is meant to be shared anyway otherwise you’re missing the point.
