Jeje Coffee

Easily the best coffee of the trip, a super-cute micro-roastery on a side street in Hangbangchun. The best thing about this place what truly makes it different from other cafes is the coffee beans. If you are a coffee fanatic like me, you should straight up start off by asking them to recommend you the best coffees they have to offer.

Linus’ BBQ

Linus’ BBQ

Southern American barbecue is done to perfection at this unpretentious place in Itaewon. While it was pretty busy when we visited, it doesn’t seem to pull the crowds the same way Vatos (a Korean-Mexican mash-up nearby) does. Which is strange because everything from the food to the service to the price is better. It you spy a Bourbon peach cobbler on the specials board, order one. Or two.

Price: [Lunch or Dinner] $

Welcome to the Jungle fried chicken

Welcome to the Jungle – fried chicken

(or words to this effect – we struggled to get a literal translation) – of course Korean friend chicken is on your list, but to really ruffle your feathers you need to head to his locals’ joint and grab a spot at one of the four tables (if it’s full, pop your name on the clipboard outside and grab a pre-dinner pint at Skim 45). What’s all the fuss about? The use of squid ink in the batter turning the perfectly coating black. Plus two sensational dipping sauces and a pile of ketchup-dressed cabbage and a pile of pickled radish to cleanse the palate. And, there’s more, a bottle of sojo costs a few dollars, meaning you can have finger-lickin, hangover-induing fun for just over $10 a person. Beat that Colonel.

Damotori Seoul

Oh my, meat and cheese never tasted do good. A perfect partnership of sizzling, spiced beef bulgogi heaped on a thick melted bed of mozzerella – the perfect way to soak up the cheap as chips makgeolli (Korea’s increasingly back-in-fashion cloudy rice spirit) that’s served here by the tasting paddle and plastic bottle (it’s decanted into lovely flasks so it’s all less down and out than it sounds).

The best bars in Seoul
Magpie Brewing Co.

Magpie Brewing Co.

Brewers of my favourite Korean craft beer, these guys have a bar that’s easy to find and have just opened a cellar next door which is churning out some great pizza (the head chef rates his pizza as one of the 5 best in Seoul). Make a mental note that the cellar bar has 3-4 beers on tap that aren’t on offer at the main bar upstairs.

Skim 45 Craft Beer Bar

Skim 45 Craft Beer Bar – Itaewon

Go in and ask for Daniella behind the bar – we love her. She think Aussies are racist. Be warned. They only produce 140 glasses of their home brewed beer a day. They can also point you in the direction of Welcome to the Jungle if you have trouble finding it.

Damatori

Damotori

As above – make a b-line for their $2 makgeolli flight – cloudy goodness on a wooden paddle. The high-end version taste like champagne but costs $18/bottle, the cheer stuff is also very tasty and costs considerably less. As they have 25 makgeollis on their list you can theoretically try them all for $10.
