Rok in Shoreditch was one of my favourite openings of 2015. Such a tiny kitchen with one chef manning the stove was pumping out some glorious smoked meats and killer cocktails. Now we’ve just had word that they’re finally ready to lift the lid on their basement bar…

Rok Smokehouse Cocktail Bar - Shoreditch

Rok Smokehouse is set to launch their very own cocktail bar – Below the Smoke next week. Located dowstairs from their restaurant at 26 Curtain road, the 24 seat bar will feature a seasonal cocktail menu designed by London cocktail guru Matt Whiley (Peg & Patriot , Fantastic Mr Fox).

Matt has worked closely with the team to develop a tailored cocktail menu that focuses on utilising Scandinavian ingredients and preparations such as smoking and fermentation more commonly seen in the kitchen upstairs.

The drinks at Below the Smoke are broadly reflective of the philosophy applied to the menu at Rok, which draws upon techniques such as brining, pickling and smoking and applying them to top quality British ingredients. At launch, the bar will feature a range of ten cocktails on rotation, which, like the upstairs menu, will evolve with the seasons. A selection of classic cocktails, non-alcoholic drinks and wines from the upstairs restaurant will also be offered.

The team have also introduced a short menu of bar bits – smaller versions of the snacks available on the main menu upstairs. These include Cardomom Almonds, House jerky and Duck Pate with fermented cloudberry on Knäckerbröd.

Orchard Monster – Peated scotch, Poire William, dandelion honey and pickled chartreuse

Rowan Berry Negroni – An alternative twist on the popular classic substituting Rowan Berry Liqueur in place of Campari
