UPDATED: These guys are on a roll with the announcement of their new northern restaurant opening on July 1, 2016.

Rök smokehouse and bar have announced the opening of their second restaurant in Islington this July. Situated at 149 Upper Street, the owners have taken over a Grade II listed building on Upper Street, turning it into a 60-seat restaurant and bar open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week.

The new opening will follow on from the success of the first restaurant on Curtain Road, Shoreditch which since opening last year has drawn a loyal following for their menu of ‘simple but exquisite’ Nordic influenced dishes.

The menu at Rök Islington will launch with a seasonal summer menu, which will also include a couple much-loved classic dishes from their Shoreditch branch. New dishes include Mackerel with pickled onions and flamed crispbread, Local grown Guinea fowl with semi-cured pork belly & butter poached wild vegetables and Dark chocolate mousse with espresso sorbet and malted crumb. Returning favourites such as scallop, nduja and seaweed, duck with lingonberry bacon jam and wood smoked peach with Laphroaig honey will also feature.

The kitchen will be headed up by executive chef Matt Young who has overseen the development of the menu at both sites. At Rök Islington this means ensuring all meat used will be reared to a high standard by working closely with suppliers such as Swaledale foods in Yorkshire and James Murdoch who has kept a flock of Guinea fowl exclusively for Rök.

The drinks menu will include cocktails developed by cocktail guru Matt Whiley, some of which have been transported from their recently launched Shoreditch basement bar ‘Below the Smoke’. Drinks such as ‘Seasonal Bones’ and ‘Aquavit Sour’ have been designed using the same philosophy applied to the food menu, which makes use of preparations such as smoking and fermentation.

An expanded wine list will also feature, this is made up of smaller producers with a focus on biodynamic and minimum intervention wines – all of which have been chosen to complement the bold and punchy flavours served up by the kitchen. The wine menu will be expanded.
