Cheerio Cafe

Cheerio

A little larger than a ‘hole in the wall’, it comprises a well-utilised front room that serves up a decent selection of food (check out the $10 lunch sandwiches) and Seven Seeds coffee.  Tt offers the usual suspects (granola, pancakes and beans on toast) while shaking things up at the same time (toasted briont – brioche/croissant hybrid, meaty-cheesy sandwiches with homemade slaws).

Pillar of Salt

Pillar of Salt

This is a smart but warm fit out – the interior especially looks pretty upmarket with its black-and-white stripped awning, but the wide open windows soon dispel any hint of Richmond-esque exclusivity. Expect high tables in the pot plant-studded courtyard – a gorgeous bright space with stone walls and wooden tabletops and benches.

Little Big Sugar Salt

Little Big Sugar Salt

This tidy little daytime café in the middle of Abbotsford’s Vietnamese strip doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel; it just strips it back to basics. Just like the name says, the menu is in four sections and looks like a pie chart. It’s simple but very new-school breakfasts and lunches, no-frills coffee served in a jar, and a healthy sense of humour.

Big Boy BBQ

Big Boy BBQ

Big Boy BBQ employs the Kansas City style of cooking, in a way an amalgamation of Carolina’s pork bonanza and Texan big beef barbecuing. It’s so great to see Lance is so passionate about his craft making a go of something that’s completely new to Melbourne, and doing it well. Big Boy BBQ is worth a go for a relaxed, satisfying exploration of the wonder that is real US-style barbecue cooking.

Jinda Thai

Jinda Thai

In a sea of cheap, tasty, but fairly humble Asian eateries in Victoria Street, Jinda Thai breaks the mould. When it comes to first impressions, though, the first thing you’ll notice is the fragrance of authentic Thai cooking – it is sublime. It’s BYO wine, corkage is a buck a head, or you can get your hands on beer and soft drink.
