It’s a fairly nondescript place from the outside. In fact I almost walked past. But once inside you are treated to Penny Farthing paraphernalia and the smell of a lovely brew!

Little Henri

Little Henri

Among the mish-mash of shops and eateries on High Street, the silhouettes of a young boy painted along Dundas Street lead you to Little Henri. Once the site of a bank, this cafe is airy and fresh, complete with storage vault and spacious courtyard. The staff are bright and snappy and the coffee is excellent.

The Estelle

The Estelle

We all like a tasting menu, and we especially like one that doesn’t break the bank and gives us ample opportunity to sample each course with a matching half-glass of wine. You can order a la carte, but with a choice of 4,5 or 7 course tasting menus it seems this is the way to go – each comes with matching wines, should you so wish.

Barry

Barry

Nothing less than a custom-made machine and house blend would satisfy the notoriously fussy Northcote crowd. In addition to the house blend, the single origin on offer changes daily, and Barry does a pour-over and an AeroPress.

The Moor's Head

The Moor’s Head

It’s worth the trek up to Thornbury for these self-proclaimed ‘inauthentic’ pizzas from the owner of Brunswick East’s Rumi. Middle Eastern flavours are at the forefront with a selection of tempting pides and manoushe – all at $19 or less. Zingy mint tea, dips served with house-baked bread, stuffed peppers and super-sugary Persian fairy floss all combine to make for an affordable and delicious night out. The large, open dining space is decorated with Lebanese movie posters and encourages a buzzy, laid-back atmosphere that befits the made-to-share menu and friendly wait staff.

Carwyn Cellars Back Room Bar

Carwyn Cellars Back Bar

There are people who know booze, then there are people who know good booze. The people at Carwyn Cellars know their grog and have been selling it for a while now. But they’ve decided to start serving it too. If you need some nosh with your booze they’re serving up cheese and charcuterie boards, and getting pizza delivered from The Moor’s Head over the road.
