The Grounds at St Columb’s
When? November 2, 2014
What is it? The Grounds at St Columb’s is a new cafe and extension of Jesuit Social Services’ Ignite program, which provides hands-on hospitality experience and training to long-term unemployed people.
Who’s behind it? The café is operated by Jesuit Social Services, which operates three cafes (Hawthorn, Camberwell, Burwood) under the Ignite banner, training long-term unemployed people hospitality and customer service skills. The Grounds at St Columb’s is the only of the four cafes to offer an a la carte menu. Over time, graduates from the training program at the other sites will be employed at The Grounds. The head chef is Kevin Dick, formerly of Cutler + Co and St Ali North.
Size? The Grounds at St Columb’s seats approx 45-50 people inside, plus outdoor seating. The building was once a chapel. Interior design/hospitality firm Zwei worked on the fitout. Notable features include recycled hardwood tables, made from rescued timber from Appleton Docks, and hand-crafted ceramic cups by Cone 11 Ceramics at Abbotsford Convent.
What’s on the Menu? The menu has an emphasis on local fresh produce, with vegetables, leaves and herbs grown at the nearby Hawthorn Kitchen Garden. Current menu items include:
