Walking into Mommi off Clapham High Street is like walking into the city’s latest night-time hotspot, thanks to its atmospheric lighting , DJ in full swing, laughter, chatter and clinking Champagne glasses echoing around an assortment of tables for more than just two. And this was just prime bottomless brunch time.
SW was out in full force to enjoy an amalgamation of menu influences from LA, South America and Japan, in a setting that glistened gold, amber and hues of red around a prominent bar counter and an impressive open kitchen, with charcoal grill and sushi counter, opposite cosy rounded leather booths.
The bottomless brunch menu here got our attention as it’s offered up as a three-course chef’s selection, featuring nachos to share for a starter, four of the standard brunch menu items as options and finishing with churros each for desert.
Top marks to the kitchen for the Smashed Avocado on Toast, which generously comes with smoked salmon. The presentation was also very good and made us think it was a shame to eat.
The compliment can’t be echoed for the Huevos Rancheros however – consisting of scrambled egg, heirloom tomato, red onion, spinach and mushroom, crispy tortilla, aji panca beans, cassava fries and coriander crème fraiche. It sounds like a lot but we spied the red onions were missing and the spinach, mushrooms and scrambled eggs were oddly amalgamated into one blob. Interestingly, the waiter himself wasn’t keen on recommending it but I threw caution to the wind in the moment. Overall the dish is fine but doesn’t look or taste like it came out of the same kitchen as its counterpart.
The churros were served warm and nicely presented in tumbler glasses and the only shame is that you just get one to finish off your meal.
The most important part of course is the bottomless bit. Having sampled quite a number of bottomless brunches around London it is always interesting to see how a restaurant operates when it comes to serving the fizz. Mommi excelled on that front – leaving the bottle on the table in an ice bucket so we could help ourselves, although that wasn’t necessary thanks to the ever present staff keeping an eye on filling up glasses.
Staff excel in more than just this area – we found them to be very friendly, helpful, full of advice and happy to please… as well as take photos of us on request, as it had been a while since we had seen each other.
Our experience here overall was really good: lovely décor, great staff, an interesting menu and the atmosphere was electric. However we did find it hard to chat and hear each other. We weren’t expecting the DJ to be there (a very cool feature) and on this occasion we found the inside environment to be the perfect setting for a birthday event or a group of friends hanging out.
If you want Mommi to be the spot for your first date or brunch catch up on the other hand, ask for a spot in their outside or downstairs seating area, when you can talk to your heart’s content and then make your way back to the main floor to carry on your evening over drinks.
