Our eternal hunt for KL’s new openings saw us stumble upon a brand-new bar in Uptown Damansara. Hyde at 53M is Kuala Lumpur’s newest speakeasy and it certainly looks the part. Central KL has a mixed bag of speakeasys such as Mr Brooks, Barlai and Tate, to name a few.
This new offering is the brainchild of the owners of The Good Batch cafe – since the speakeasy bar is not marked outside in any way you need to keep your eyes out for the cafe -as the bar is above it and accessible by the small stairwell to the side of it.
The bar is a mix of dark leather and shiny black tiles – the exposed filament bulbs complete the look – and it’s a real departure from the street stalls surrounding the outside of the bar.
What makes a nice change from all the freezing bar dungeons throughout Asia (please, turn down the aircon) is that the savvy owners are coming to the realisation that customers want the option of sitting in the open air – us Westerners have grown used to having the alfresco option open to them – and it’s the perfect place to down a few cold drinks.
It’s also a good decision that they went with a few craft beer options like Mountain Goat Brewery from Melbourne, Hitachino from Japan and Brewdog from Scotland. I would argue that many of the locals will never have encountered craft beer and this will be a great opportunity to ween them off Tiger and Guinness.
To test out the bartender I took the option of a New York Sour which came in a proper glass and was well blanaced with sweet, sour and a good dash of alcohol. There was the opportunity to try some bar snacks such as chicken skewers, truffled mushroom and cheese spring rolls and sui kow with seafood paste for those wanting to keep things local.
Hyde at 53M is indeed well hidden and well worth a discovery journey out to Damasara Uptown. We would also suggest if you’re looking for a place for pre- or post-dinner drinks, head a few doors down to Fat Spoon where two girls have taken the northern Malaysian dishes taught to them by their grandmother and put them to good use in a unique little restaurant a few doors down from the bar.
We visited when it first opened and saw good things which has enticed us to return multiple times.
