Though sourdough pizza is nothing particularly new to Londoners, it took a while for it to make it’s way to Crystal Palace but hallelujah in late 2015 it did in the form of Four Hundred Rabbits – and boy was it worth the wait.

There are few meals I find more satisfying than freshly rolled dough topped with quality ingredients and with a hint of smokiness that you can only get from cooking in a wood fired oven and Four Hundred Rabbits are doing the art justice.Four Hundred Rabbits - Sourdough Pizza

Scanning the menu of flavour combinations both classic and a bit more experimental (piquillo peppers, lilliput capers and goats cheese anyone?), I could’ve gone for any one but settled in with the house-aged Hereford beef, green chilli, onions, tomato and mozzarella number, which was the bomb. Toppings generous and dough fresh with that beautiful resistance to the bite which is the calling card of sourdough, I couldn’t want for more.

Though the usual menu items in their own right are quite special, 400 Rabbits operate a revolving menu of more experimental flavours which I recommend you consider. On this visit, the pig cheek, shredded sprout, Lincolnshire poacher, tomato and mozzarella pizza disappeared nearly as quickly as it was brought to the table such was its quality. Who would’ve thought that brussels sprouts on a pizza could work with its slight bitterness actually adding an interesting dimension to each bite? 400 Rabbits did and I won’t question them again.

Finishing with a gingerbread gelato from Gelupo (one of an ever changing menu) topped with salted caramel sauce, I reflect on a top meal and one which proves Four Hundred Rabbits is no pretender. With a craft beer menu as impressive as the pizza, these guys are here to stay and I couldn’t be more pleased about it.
