The best places in Fitzroy for your coffee fix
Hammer and Tong

Hammer and Tong

Fitzroy Street can be good but in reality it’s a good food wasteland. Hammer and Tong have cut a niche for themselves with some great coffee and doing their brunch selection with an Asian twist which has won them plaudits from many of Melbourne’s food critics. I prefer their dinner menu – but it’s a worthwhile coffee stop.

Stagger Lee

Stagger Lee

The sister cafe of Collingwood’s Proud Mary – these guys recently took out the crown for Melbourne’s Best New Cafe. Stagger Lee was a Missouri gangster and as such the menu follows a loose American Midwest theme. There’s the ‘Stack & Billy Burger’, a double-pattied Black Angus burger with catsup, American mustard and pickles, served with bacon croquettes. Because it’s a Proud Mary thing, naturally there’s an emphasis on coffee here too.

Formerly the Fitzroy stables, complete with laneway running through its middle, and later a wool store, it has a kitchen serving up food all day and night, including pizzas, sharing plates and sweets, and occasionally taps kegs of limited run Little Creatures beers that may never see the light of day elsewhere.

Little Blood

Little Blood

Because this place has hammocks. Hammocks! All the ingredients you need to enjoy tequila as it ought to be enjoyed — including hammocks. Little Blood is a cheeky, candle-lit secret of a bar. The flavour-drenched, rotating menu of Mexican dishes (see: the tantalising taquitos) are perfect company for a boozy affair.
