Unless you’ve been living in a cave, you would’ve noticed the fried chicken takeover of London. What started as a small movement in places like Rita’s Diner, quickly blew up to now include names such as Bird and Chick’n’Sours. London got a taste of gourmet fried chicken and decided they really really liked it – and I for one am all in on that. But fried chicken isn’t anything new to this city you say with the likes of KFC and their lesser knock-off cousins having entrenched themselves into our history and it’s true that a piece of dodgy chicken from my local will always hold nostalgic appeal. However, between the high-end and the low-end, there is a question mark – what do you do those days you want a good piece of fried chicken made with quality ingredients, which comes with all the memories but leaves out the risk of food poisoning? That’s where Billy and the chicks come to answer the call.
Billy and the Chicks - Soho, London
Built on a foundation of childhood experiences, Billy and the chicks is the brain child of two friends, Billy and Sam, who are recapturing their youth through quality free-range chicken and some of Britain’s best suppliers including Bread Ahead and Neal’s Yard with, what I can only describe, is their take on the chicken made famous by the Colonel.

Each bite of the fried chicken and hot wings were a step back in time, conjuring up flashbacks of days at university or coming home late after a forgettable night out but with a difference; this chicken was pimped to the max. Using Cotswolds Whites as their poultry of choice, the chicken was succulent and coated with a spice mix which pays homage to the original famed 11.

This extended to include their chicken burger; a juicy piece of breast, coated in spice and finished off with cheese, salad and in a buttery Bread Ahead brioche burger bun.

Chicken aside, other offerings, such as sticky ribs, though nothing groundbreaking, are perfectly palatable and sides play their role well as a supporting cast. Throw in an extensive menu of craft beer and cocktails and you’ve got all the makings for a fun night out reminiscing on days gone by.
