What is it? Café / Eatery with great food and superb coffee
Who’s behind it? The owner, Inga Feldman, has another popular café in Port Melbourne with the same name. Her Russian heritage helped to bring some Russian dishes to the menu. The head chef, Ryo Kitahara, is a classically trained chef who worked as a head chef of the French Iron Chef’s restaurants in Japan. He was previously executive chef for Heirloom in the CBD.

What’s on the Menu? Innovative breakfast dishes including Spicy Ratatouille baked eggs or the Texan fry up special with American BBQ slow smoked brisket pan fried with kiefler potatoes, mushrooms, house made BBQ sauce with poached egg. For Lunch they have an unusual Melbourne-Russian specials menu as well. Lately a focus on American BBQ with a contender for Melbourne’s best Reuben.

Dai was head chef with Rene at Pelican and then head chef at Dandelion in Elwood. What is it? A contemporary modern fusion of traditional Japanese and Italian dishes with specialty coffee by Sensory Lab.
Who’s behind it? Peter Handras, owner of Purple Peanuts has teamed with Shoichi Ueda, from Michelin, to offer a new type of cuisine with a twist.
Size? 16- 20 people can dine in and take away is available too. The entire concept (interior and brand design) by BrandWorks.
What’s on the Menu? The key ingredient that solidifies Pallet Espresso is the seamless marriage of the two very delectable cuisines but with distinct Melbourne twist. The Chicken Karaage with succulent marinated chicken strips and freshly prepared salad between two slices of toasted sesame bread is a favourite.

What is it? Racks Ribs Co is a take away restaurant in Caulfield specialising in ribs.
Who’s behind it? The owner is Saul Miller, who currently owns Rare Steakhouse in both Kings street and Little Collins street, and the Squires loft city steakhouse in Goldie place. With a long history of experience in take-away restaurants and steak houses, this is Saul’s most recent venture.
Size? Take away only, however a few bar stools for those who wish to grab a bib and eat in.
What’s on the Menu? Forget American style smoky ribs – these ribs are tangy and bursting with a sweetish barbeque char-grilled flavor. Specialties include Beef Ribs, Pork Ribs, Boerewors (traditional south African beef sausage), and signature gourmet signature sauces which are perfect for dipping your homemade onion rings and steakhouse grade hot chips (chips come with every rib order)

What is it? Cafe in St Kilda, serving breakfast and lunch and Proud Mary Coffee
Who’s behind it? Owner Jason Bates, previously manager at Mart and Grocery Bar and previously owner of Hell’s Kitchen. Head Chef Mirko Richter, previously Fitzrovia, Royal Saxon and Pelican
Size? 50 seats, seats at bar, late sixties/early 70s home style architecture with lots of plants
What’s on the Menu? Killer bircher muesli, free range eggs from Bendigo and interesting dishes such as coconut pancakes with pink peppered berries and vanilla mascarpone. Signature dish; Smoked trout, cavolo nero, whitlof, radicchio, poached egg and samphire salsa.

When? August 20, 2013
What is it? An unassuming Northcote warehouse transformed, The Herbert Cafe offers famed Brunswick-based Padre coffee and all things yummy to eat.
Who’s behind it? Two local builders (Keenan Built) and an architect from Germany (UMBAU placeformspace) combined their respective trades and embarked on a little project affectionately known as ‘The Herb’. From the raw exposed concrete bench top to the recycled timber seating, the fit out was completed entirely of their own bare hands. This is their first cafe venture.
The boys have been joined by Amanda Skipper and Lindsey Galbraith who manage the cafe and provide the industry know-how. The delicious menu is their own creation.
Size? Around 20 seats; including communal tables inside and out. Design and construction: The Herbert Partnership.
What’s on the Menu? Padre coffee, Mörk hot chocolate, Prana Chai. All day brunch-style eats: bircher muesli, chickpea and avocado smash, banana bread stack, house made baked beans, bacon and egg breakfast ciabatta, croque monsieur and more, sweet things supplied by Divine.

What is it? The first cafe by boutique coffee roasters, Brother Thomas. Having started supplying coffee two years ago, this will be an opportunity to showcase the brand’s take on all things melbourne cafe.
Who’s behind it? Owner – Jerome Dadon, ex-head Barista of the Goat House Cafe Roastery and owner of Brother Thomas Coffee. Head Chef – John Watt, ex-sous chef of The Cricketer’s Arms in Port Melbourne.
Size? 50 seats, indoor and outdoor dining and a large communal table.

What’s on the Menu? Specialty coffee with Brother Thomas roasted house and rotating blends, gourmet sandwiches and pies, brunch tarts, delicious breakfast fare, daily specials and more. Notables are the bacon and egg brioche slider, the field mushroom and brie toasted grande and the beef cheek pie with salad.
When? Reopened August 28, 2013 – also open for dinner Fridays and Saturdays
What is it? A bakery café specializing in sourdough breads, baked goods and pastries.
Size? 40 seats plus 2 communal tables, Designed by Fiona Drago
What’s on the Menu? The café menu changes every three weeks to focus on seasonal produce while each item is matched with one of Rustica’s delicious breads. All items served in the cafe are made in the onsite bakery with popular dishes such as brioche french toast with caramelized banana, nutella, vanilla bean gelato and roasted hazelnuts or the Rustica breakfast board consisting of Brenton’s housemade granola, a poached free-range egg on choice of bread, organic yoghurt, seasonal poached fruits, smashed avocado, and organic juice – amazing value in Fitzroy for $15.50. Customers can also interchange the type of bread they would like with any of their meals.
Other popular daily items co-created between Brenton and Pastry Chef Steve Nicholoff, are Rustica’s hand-made gourmet pies baked fresh every morning (think slow roasted beef cheeks), roast vegetable and lentil pasties, and gourmet spiced pork sausage rolls with house made relishes. For the sweet tooth, Portuguese tarts, almond croissants, fruit danishes, cakes, macaroons and house made jams.

What’s on the Menu? New style Chinese cooking, using local and seasonal produce, modern and traditional techniques, Prawn cracker with oriental citrus, Milk bun with candied pork, pork floss and salted cucumber, Sichuan style pickled vegetables and crackers, Slow roasted Yunan style lamb shoulder and 8 treasure grains for two or more, Osmanthus tea jelly and lychee sorbet.

What is it? A modern take on traditional Spanish and Basque tapas. Bar Nacional will be the first restaurant to open in the newly announced Collins Square precinct, bringing together the great aspects of Spanish food culture: the lively dining atmosphere, careful preparation and focus on quality, seasonal ingredients.
Who’s behind it? Household name Pete Evans (of My Kitchen Rules fame) and internationally renowned chef Gavin Baker in a unique partnership with financier, Lang Walker.
Size? 60 inside plus outside seating
What’s on the menu? Top quality meats and produce from specialist farmers, trusted fishermen, and local meat suppliers. The menu features a variety of dishes ranging from roasted Chatham Island blue cod with smoked chilies to crispy pig’s head with pickled carrots and horseradish.

What is it? Cheeky Brothers is looking to be that perfect break out area away from the stress at work. For every coffee sold Cheeky brothers donates 5 cents to the Alola foundation which helps rebuild East Timor. The Alola foundation provides education, builds schools and feeds the people of East Timor. This is inline with the global objective of ending world poverty. Passionate about serving people and providing the highest level of customer satisfaction, it’s what keeps their customers coming back for more.
Who’s behind it? Head chef Helena Duarte Barbosa has a Portuguese background and specialises in cooking Portuguese, Italian and modern Australian food. She’s very passionate about her food and coffee. They have 3 qualified baristas with more than 10 years experienced. It’s a family oriented environment – so swing by with the kids.
Size? Indoor: 20 seats, outdoor: 12 seats.
What’s on the Menu? Di Bella supplies their coffee. They sell fresh rolls, wraps, and sandwiches and have rotating lunch specials. Their authentic Portuguese tarts are the talk of Kensington – as is the authentic Portuguese chicken. Realising the sky high costs of breakfasts around Melbourne – all prices are under $15 and you coffee-up you have the option to choose the Modena blend or the single origin coffee of the week for the same price.

What’s on the Menu? The “nose maki” – fresh fish and their special home-made sauce on sushi rolls are the signature dish. There’s also a plethora of Japanese groceries such as snacks, sauces, frozen foods, instant noodles and ice creams for grocery.

Who’s behind it? Two local birds obviously - Sally and Narelle. They’re friends who have known each other for 36 years and been in the industry for forty years combined. They have worked at The Graham Hotel in Port Melbourne, Blue Train Cafe and Bistro 1

What’s on the menu? Everything is homemade by the two local birds: choc raspberry brownies, real banana bread, kennel and orange house cured salmon mini rolls, toasted jaffles, mini hamburgers and a weekly salad.

Who’s behind it? Owned by Camillo Ippoliti from Revolver, Cookie and The Toff in Town, Chef Karen Batson of Revolver, Cookie and Toff.
Size? 50-60 pax downstairs. Upstairs they seat the bandroom too for lunches on Friday.
What’s on the Menu? The menu is fresh and simple. Favourites on the menu include the jalapeno donuts with maple butter, avocado and corn salsa, the zucchini pancakes with cured kingfish, fennel and radish right in time for spring. Expect to find a rotatation of daily lunch and evening specials too – evening specials are matched with a cocktail.
