Balls for breakfast? You better believe it.

We fell for the meat and wine charms of the imaginatively named Meatball & Wine Bar last year, and have been heading back to the charming Flinders Lane restaurant for their trio of sliders, beautiful charcuterie and mouth-wateringly fresh mozzarella whenever we get the chance.

Now, the team are expanding their spherical repertoire with a breakfast menu. That’s right. Egg balls. Scrambled eggs, shaped into a ball and baked.

Following the formula of the main menu, the eggs are available in three styles – creamy egg, egg with charred corn and aged cheddar, and green egg with salsa verde – and served with a choice of three sauces – red Italian tomato, white hollandaise, or green pesto salsa verde.

The verdict? We love this place – the exposed brick walls, the long cooper bar, the Italian varietals on the wine list – and we wanted to love their latest offerings, but they just didn’t quite hit the dizzy heights that the balls on the lunch and dinner menu manage to reach. A little dry and a little bland, although the range of potential sides (artisan smoked salmon, avocado, smoky grilled bacon and mushroom with taleggio) certainly add interest. They do, however, seem to be working a treat in the sliders with bacon or salmon, and I have no doubt the talented team in the kitchen will iron out these early-day kinks.

In the meantime, there are plenty other options that are proving popular among punters; the breakfast menu also includes non-spherical offerings, such as corn cakes with spinach and ricotta, avocado and caprese with heirloom tomatoes, mozzarella, basil and avocado on quinoa bread. The ball theme creeps back in with the warm panettone and muscatel balls, which have been rolled in honey, served with vanilla bean yoghurt. Also baked eggs with beans, which feature a pork or vegetable ball.

Never skimping on quality, coffee by Dukes and tea by Storm in a Teacup keep local office workers popping back throughout the day – and we urge you to do the same – this is a great little place, now happily bridging the gap from breakfast to lunch by opening Monday to Friday 7-11am.

Saturday and Sunday 12noon-late.
