With summer starting to bear down on us, many of the city’s mover and shakers in the bar scene have decided to put the weather to good use in an attempt to get the locals to find new hidden gems…. And if we are are talking about hidden then lets talk about this new wooden door that has popped up at the bottom of Malthouse Lane.
I spent some time walking up and down Malthouse Lane telling myself that I definitely had the address right. From Flinders Lane if you don’t totally pass The French Brasserie then you haven’t gone far enough but if you wander into the Medina Hotel’s reception area you have gone too far.
But just at the top of the stairs of the Medina reception you will find an entrance into a whisky focused cocktail bar – the Melbourne branch of Sven Almenning’s Eau de Vie. The very discreet entrance leads into what I can only compare to London’s branch of Milk & Honey. But the addition of dining concepts such as cocktail degustation dinners will really put this place on the map. I will try to get to one of these soon and report back my findings – so look for an update in the near future.
Head Chef Mark Favaloro (ex-Movida) has also put together a separate menu for cocktail drinkers utilising what he knows best – small to medium tapas style dishes. Looking at the very reasonable prices on offer from this level of chef I will be definitely heading back to sample Mark’s wares.
If you head away from the kitchen, slide apart the massive doors which lead you into the ‘Whisky Room’. Inside here, customers can rent a fixed-temperature locker for $200 a month to store their private bottle of whisky.
I am keen to see how Melbournians take to this new endeavour. After talking to the assistant manager Kash, she intimated that even though they are but 3 days old, a few ‘no booking’ restaurants have been very hesitant to send diners along for pre dinner drinks as they feel threatened that due to the quality and price of the food, they may not get the diners returning for dinner. And so they should.
