London Beer City goes down from 7th – 16th August 2015. This will be our first craft beer festival after surviving multiple Good Beer Weeks back in Melbourne, Australia. And fark am I pumped for this.
As with all festivals you needs someone to come to the party and help narrow down the selection. Here’s our top picks for each day of the festival:
OPENING PARTY (X2)
Opening parties is where it’s at when it comes to beer festivities. You’ll know that everyone (we’re talking brewers) involved will be there blowing out the cobwebs and getting into the mood for what will be for them a truly stressful week.
Our two hubs will have great beer – including our one-off London Beer City brew with Fourpure – plus loads more. The perfect way to kick off a superb week. More details coming soon!
CASK RARITIES DAY
SOUTHWARK BREWING FREE
Coming from Australia where anything cask is worth showing up for I’m really interested to find out what guys in the industry over here are planning to put into cask for me to sample.
There’ll be beers not normally found in cask for one day only, so don’t miss out!
MEMBER TAP TAKEOVER
I’ve been interested in the metopes that have been having Down Under and the amazing brews that home brewers come up with. These are the guys that will take the next step into becoming a commercial brewer or opening their own joint – find them here first.
Ubrew’s members take over the taps all day – you won’t find this beer anyone else in earth. About as local and small batch as it gets.
OPENING DAY @ SIGNATURE BREW
SIGNATURE BREW FREE
They’re the new kid in town so you know the team will be on form for the crowd that arrives.
Signature will be holding its very first ever open day at the new brewery in Leyton to celebrate London Beer City. There’ll be a well-stocked bar, guided tours and a free BBQ.
HOPS AND SHIRTS
Holy shit do I have a craft beer boner for the Beavertown Beers. On arriving back in London one of the first beers I tasted that wasn’t here a few years back was the Gamma Ray and it’s held my no. 1 spot for the last few months. Plus there’s a fricking march tent to get Tee’s. I’m well sorted.
Beavertown has got big things planned for London Beer City. You can expect not only a special one-off brew, but also one-off t-shirts designed for the occasion.
PORTERS, PEERS AND PILGRIMS:
A LONDON BREWERY HISTORY WALK
OLD STREET TUBE £10
If you’ve always lived in London you might not realise that to get under the skin of the city you have to walk it with an expert. And why not find out about some amazing pubs that have never been on your radar?
Join Des De Moor, author of the recently republished CAMRA Guide to London’s Best Beer Pubs and Bars, on a fascinating walking tour of London’s brewery heritage and numerous other historic sites. Meet at Old Street Underground station, in the subway opposite the station exit.
CHEESE, MEET BEER
THE BEER SHOP £16
Cheese from the best cheese shop in London matched with Beer?! We had Milk The Cow in Melbourne that matched cheese with either wine, beer or craft spirits so I want to see what magic they can come up with here.
Martin Tkalez, manager of the magnificent Neal’s Yard Dairy at Borough, will be pairing three fine cheeses with three beers.
40 Nunhead Green, SE15 3QF
BELGIAN BEER MATCHING DINNER
I’m raging to get to Belgium and head out to check out some breweries but in the meantime there is this… It’s one of the few matching dinners so well worth booking early – plus you can’t go past a Mikkeller collab.
Join beermerchants.com for a special evening of rare Belgian beers and delicious Belgian food. Classic dishes will be paired with one-off beers and special vintages, including Mikkeller’s collaboration beer with Lindemans and Westmalle extra, previously never sold in the UK.
BREW BY NUMBERS TBC
I’m a foodie by heart and if you’re telling me there’s this type of collaboration on the cards then I am *WELL EXCITED*.
Beer and food are great together, even better when the producers of both are the same people. Brew By Numbers will be designing a series of small-batch collaboration beers with some of London’s hottest new restaurants for a night of culinary and brewing excellence at their taproom in Bermondsey, pairing each beer to a dish from the restaurant who helped to brew it
THE ART OF DRINKING BEER
Put some authentic London Beer art on your walls. It’s like a gallery – but 100% less boring.
The guys from London Beach Gallery are taking over our Camden Town Brewery Bar with the “Art of Drinking Beer” exhibition. Come along and experience some of London’s best illustrators decking out our Camden bottles for the night. Art will be available to purchase, limited edition Camden beer will be on hand all night, DJs will be spinning and lots more!
BEER & DOUGHNUT MATCHING
I saw this and like there was no chance I wasn’t going to get involved!
Beer and food matching gets sticky! Five hand-made doughnuts from The Hole will be matched to five of The Five Points’ tastiest brews.
7pm ~ 9:30pm,

HOW TO JUDGE BEER
I’m still relatively new to the craft beer game. I know what I like and am willing to try anything twice. But I need a kind of insight that can only be explained by the experts. Well keen.
Want to tell a well-made beer from a bad one? This teaser course will give dedicated and enthusiastic individuals insights into judging the quality and character of beers, from understanding styles and describing positive traits to identifying faults. Run by FlavorActiV and the Beer Academy.
LONDON CRAFT BEER FESTIVAL
OVAL SPACE £38.50
It’s what we’re all here for isn’t it. I have one of our Melbourne beer followers flying over and attending. He may well not be here exclusively for this but who’s kidding – he’s booked out this day and so have we.
The London Craft Beer Festival is back for its third edition – and Thursday evening is the London Beer City session. With over 25 breweries, from across London, the UK and Europe, this is not to be missed.
LONDON BEER £25
25 x 25. I’m planning on going home tipsy.
Here’s a quick way to get a feel for whats happening in the London beer scene. You’ll be tasting 25 beers from 25 different breweries, including some you surely won’t have tried before. Ticket includes £10 bottle shop credit.
BEGINNER’S BREW COURSE
Smart idea having this towards the end of the week once we all work out our favourite beers and after chatting to the brewers thinking we could do it all ourselves (we can’t). But if you’re thinking of bring your own post-festival beer this is the place to lay the groundwork.
Fancy learning to brew? Here’s your chance, on an intensive, one-day course where the focus is on hops.
SEE INSIDE THE HIVE
This just has me intrigued.
The taproom at the Beer Hive will be open from noon with a selection of exclusively available beers from Clarkshaws Brewery and London Beer Lab.
CHEESE SESSIONS DAY 6
Cheese again at the end of the week. The only difference is it’s only the best of the best.
The finale. Five cheese and beer pairings, each one representing the best match from each brewery session of the week. The supreme champion to be picked by You, The People. Let your voice be heard!
Well I hope to have been able to help you steer your craft beer ship through the catalogue – Full details can be found here. Really you can’t go wrong and I just wanted to throw my two cents in cause I’m so damned excited for it. Follow them here: Facebook. Twitter. Instagram.
